Mercats del Ninot

This iconic Barcelona market reopened in 2015 after a complete renovation that has lasted five years. The municipal market in Eixample district opened with 81 new stalls, colorful shop counters, spacious hallways, many tasting bars, and keeping intact the metallic latticework exterior facade and shops built into the building itself.

It also incorporates new services such as a basement supermarket, wifi and new morning and afternoon extended hours.

The original market was started by the Council of the Parliament in 1892, before it joined Barcelona, and was opened in 1894. The market was to be named “El Porvenir” or the Future, for being the only market in all its history for the people, also, they believed it to be located in an up-and-coming, thriving area of the city at the time.

However, for most of its history, the market was nicknamed el ninot or “doll” market, and this name stuck with the locals.  The  name came from a popular tavern nearby called “el Ninot”, and the popularity of the tavern came from being located outside the city entry and the city toll houses. Which meant they could sell cheaper wine than inside Barcelona because the public did not have to paid the entry fee to the city.

Few cities in the world can claim a network such as that of Barcelona: 39 food markets and 4 markets selling other goods form a unique heritage that should be maintained and preserved. The stalls are a showcase for a whole host of fresh produce.

Barcelona’s markets are places where you can enjoy a lively, vibrant atmosphere in surroundings where the cries of the market’s stallholders and the daily bustle intermingle. It was named the world’s best food market at the Congress of the World Union of Wholesale Markets in Washington 2006.

La decisió de construir el Mercat fou presa per l’Ajuntament de les Corts sobre l’any 1892, abans que estigués unit a la ciutat de Barcelona, i fou posat en funcionament l’any 1894. Al mercat li va ésser imposat el nom de “El Porvenir”, per ésser l’únic Mercat que aquest poble havia tingut en tota la seva història, i per estar ubicat en una zona que creien pròspera.

Tot i així, el nom popular del mercat, pel que sempre se l’ha conegut, és el de “Mercat del Ninot”. Aquest nom el va rebre d’una taverna molt popular, que ja l’havia donat al sector, i la popularitat de la qual provenia de vendre el vi a més bon preu que a Barcelona, ja que per estar situada fora de la línia dels Burots, no havia de pagar el cànon d’entrada a la Ciutat.

Barcelona és una de les poques ciutats del món que pot presumir d’una xarxa de mercats distribuïts de tal manera que tots els barris tenen un mercat aprop. Més enllà de la seva aportació a la qualitat de vida dels ciutadans en tant que impulsors d’una dieta sana i equilibrada, els mercats barcelonins miren cap al futur amb la introducció de nous serveis d’acord amb les necessitats comercials del segle XXI. I també tenen els ulls posats en el passat, ja que els edificis que els allotgen són un reflex de la història de la ciutat i els seus ciutadans.
